Literacy Definition

Literacy is control of secondary uses of Language. Literacy practices attempts both to handle the events and the pattern around literacy and to link them to something broader of a cultural and social kind. Literacy practices also refer to the broader cultural conception of particular ways of thinking about and doing reading and writing in cultural contexts. 

Illiteracy is a lack of control and/or knowledge of language, specific discourses, and/or technology often tied to a lack of access.

Characteristics of a literate person: One who is able to think, read, write, and is able to understand the conventions, vocabulary, and history of a particular discourse. Also, one who is able to navigate specific technologies to use them purposefully and intentionally.
